Tuscany

…the land dreams are made of.  The olive trees, sunflowers, vineyards, hilltowns, cobblestone streets, and piazzas ooze with charm.  Join us for a week-long journey of Tuscany inlcuding Cortona, Montepulciano, Montalcino, Lake Trasimeno and Orvieto.   The tour will be based in Cortona, one of our favorite places in Tuscany.

Cortona

Arrive in Cortona, Tuscany.  Check-in to your boutique hotel, in the heart of Cortona.

• Tour historical Cortona with a local guide.
• Hike to the Franciscan Hermitage “Le Celle”, built in 1211; the Fortezza del Girifalco and the Basilica of Santa Margherita.
• Enjoy two winery tours and tastings.
• Day trip to the medieval hilltop town of Montepulciano, surrounded by vineyards and known for it’s Vino Nobile red wine.  Visit the Torre di Pulcinella clock tower.  Enjoy shopping, dining and sightseeing at your leisure.
• Visit Lake Trasimeno, located in the green heart of Umbria, with a visit to Castiglione del Lago.  The Castle is located on a limestone promontory, above the ruins of several Etruscan tombs.
• Visit Montalcino, a hill town and commune, famous for its Brunello di Montalcino wine. Stop at the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, a former Benedictine monastery.
• And finally visit Orvieto, a small city perched on a rock cliff in Umbria.   You will stop at the Orvieto Cathedral dating from 1290, with its imposing mosaic facade and marble Pieta sculpture. Orvieto is also a wonderful place to shop for ceramics and bronze items.

With all of these activities, you will still have time to personalize this tour to make it your Tuscan dream come true.  Possible add-ons include Wine, Shine and Dine, a special dining event which includes a wine tasting and gourmet meal prepared by a local chef.  Or you could try a cooking class led by a local chef.  Possibilities also include bike tours, horse riding, car or bike rentals, private guided tours to Chianti, Florence or the Cinque Terre, and more.

This is a general outline of activities.  Tours arranged with local guides will go on regardless of weather conditions.  However, other activities may be changed, added, or deleted if there is bad weather or if we are lucky enough to have better opportunities come along.  For that reason, it is important to be open and flexible in order to have the best possible experience. **
